Earnhardt's Secure Top 5 Finish in 24 Hour Race
The majority of the attention was because of who was behind the wheel. Dale Earnhardt, along with Dale Earnhardt, Jr., Andy Pilgrim and Kelly Collins. Earnhardt has won basically every race held at Daytona at least once, with the exception of the truck race of course, so he was going into the race with a lot of confidence. His son, on the other hand, likes anything that looks good and moves fast, and that isn't necessary limited to cars. As far as the actual race goes, in the first several hours, the team didn't advance too much from their starting spot, being mired anywhere from 11th through 13th. But, as the race progressed and cars began to drop out, the Pilgrim-led team managed to gradually come up through the pack, and eventually ended up in 4th place despite rainy conditions. Their best lap was on their 267th of the 642 they completed, and that was at a time of 1:52.089 m/s. They finished 14 laps behind the leader, which was also a Corvette team. That team, basically a team car to the Pilgrim team, was led by occassional NASCAR competitior Ron Fellows, a noted road racing specialist. Rolex 24 Hours at Daytona February 3rd-4th, 2001
